Getting your first job is one of the most exciting things in your life. As a teen you dream about all the things you’re going to buy with your money and all the places you’re going to go. But while there is so much excitement around this special time in your life, there are a few things you need to know before getting started, and we’ve gathered this information for you in 5 Things You Need To Know Before Getting Your First Job.

  • The first thing that you should know about is the minimum age to work – this is not only for your protection but for the protection of the people who might hire you as well. There are federal and state guidelines about how old you have to be before you can work. Also, there are certain jobs and places that are prohibited by law for teenagers to work in.   • After finding out if you’re at the right age to work, then I bet the next most important thing you want to know about is the minimum wage. Did you know that by law employers are not allowed to pay you below a certain rate? Yup, it’s true. There are also special rules for wages for full-time students, student learner and people with disabilities.   • Next, before getting a job, you should also know the maximum number of hours an employer can legally ask you to work. Sometimes employers try to save money on the number of people they hire by giving the employees they do have a lot of extra hours, but in some cases this may not be legal for them to do. Teenagers are only allowed to work a set number of hours per day during school days and a maximum number of hours during the week.
