Be Inspired: 8 Year Old Girl Makin Bacon With Her Million Dollar Idea

The fact is, kids have come up with some of the best and greatest ideas ideas in all areas of life. Ramez Sasson once said, “success is the outcome of thinking, visualizing, planning and taking action”. Abbey Fleck is a walking example of this saying and she didn’t let being a kid stop her from visualizing her dream and taking action. Now fast forward several years later and Abbey Fleck is all the richer for believing in herself and her ideas. Read on and Be Inspired:

My dad was cooking bacon one Saturday morning,” remembers Abbey, now 15 and living in White Bear Lake, MN. “When he took it out of the microwave, we were out of paper towels to soak up the grease. So, he was just holding it up and the fat was dripping off of it.”

At that point, Abbey’s dad, Jon, joked, “It’s too bad we can’t just hang this up somewhere and let it drip dry.” It was at that moment, says Abbey, that her million-dollar idea was born. “I said, ‘Well, why don’t you just cook it hanging up?’”

That same day, Abbey drew a sketch of her idea and showed it to her dad. “We went down in our basement and tried making some prototypes (models),” she says. “We used wooden dowels and pieces of plastic coat hangers.” Then they inserted their wood and plastic racks into a glass dish, loaded the contraption with bacon, and put the whole crazy experiment in the microwave. “It worked! The fat dripped off the bacon,” says Abbey, laughing, “but the materials weren’t the best.”

Bringing Home the Bacon

The Flecks knew the Makin Bacon dish was a great product, so they offered it to big retailers like Wal-Mart and K-mart who, at first, turned down the funky-looking dish. So the Flecks took it to the Armour company, makers of Armour brand bacon.

Armour liked the Flecks’ bacon-cooking idea, and placed an ad for the Makin Bacon dish on the back of each package of Armour bacon. Customers sent in $6.99 and a UPC bar code symbol from the bacon, and got the Makin Bacon dish in the mail. This deal, says Jon, “was brilliant because we received the money before we shipped the product.”

As word of Abbey’s invention spread, she became company spokesperson to the media. Over the last six years, Abbey has talked to reporters from newspapers, magazines, radio, and TV, and appeared on television shows like Oprah, Dateline NBC, 20/20, and The Late Show with David Letterman.

All the press coverage soon got the attention of Wal-Mart and the Flecks got their original wish — a distribution agreement with a national chain store. However, this created another problem. The Flecks needed a lot of cash so they could make 100,000 dishes and send them to Wal-Mart right away. Abbey’s grandfather, George Fleck, took out a loan on his farm so Abbey and her dad could have the money they needed

One of the first places you should advertise your lawn care business is in your neighborhood near where you live and where you’ll be mowing lawns. So if you’re at a loss for ideas for how to get customers or market your lawn care business, I’ve gathered all the related tips that we’ve written about in some of our previous marketing articles in this article on 20 creative ways you can advertise your lawn care business in your neighborhood:

One of the very first ways you should advertise your lawn care business is by telling your family and friends about it. They are your first pool of support and moral boosters. Tell them about what you are up to during visits or even call them out of the blue to say hi and update them on what’s happening with you. Let them know how much you appreciate their help and make them feel that they are a big part of your growth as a budding entrepreneur.
Ask your family and friends in your neighborhood if you can borrow their window spaces. Design their windows for free in exchange for putting your advertisement up there. Use bold signs, big letters and bright colors to attract attention. Make sure that it can be seen from afar.
Put up a sign in your lawn. Make it big and use creative pictures.
Create key-chains or key-rings with your name and logo on it to give them away at locksmiths, car shops, gasoline stations, etc in your area.
Get custom apparel like caps or shirts and wear them whenever you go out. You could also give some of these away as in the above example as well.
Get a lot of balloons, tie your information on the strings, and let them all just fly away or better yet, stand on the corner and give them away.

But with a little preparation in advance, it doesn’t have to be so bad. Here are 10 job interview tips for teens to help you ace your next job interview:

Before going for an interview, try to do a bit of research about the company that you’re going to be interviewing with. Often, interviewers ask you what you know about their company and it will be a big plus in your favor if you can impress them with what you know about their company. This will show that you did your homework.
Prepare what you’re going to wear to your interview at least one day in advance and try everything on in the mirror to make sure everything looks alright and nothing needs your attention. Be sure to iron your clothes in advance and hang it up along with any accessories that you might wear. When you put your clothes on for the interview, you should be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say “dang, I look good!”
For those of you who are horrible about keeping track of time, do not, I repeat: DO NOT be late. If you’re late for the interview you are about to get, your boss will probably think that you’re also going to be late for work and not put much effort, care, or thought into actually doing your job as well.
Make sure that you’re always as friendly as you can be towards everyone that you meet, no matter who they are. That guy that you told to go away because he was annoying may actually be your future boss!
When you meet your interviewer for the first time, make sure you give him or her a nice firm handshake – not wimpy and not bone-crushing.
Pay attention to the way you walk. No, I’m not kidding about this. When you walk, you should walk with confidence – not shuffling your feet.
During the interview, remember to smile – but don’t force it, just let it come naturally.
Keep your posture good and straight. Ever hear your mom tell you, “Don’t slouch!” ? There’s a reason for that. Slouching makes you look nervous and unconfident, while holding yourself up straight makes you appear comfortable and confident at the same time. Not only that, but keep your chin up. You don’t have to raise it to the sky, but don’t lower your head as if you’re afraid or nervous.
Most of all, just relax. Be confident in yourself and know that you’re good enough to get this job. If you do that, you’ll have no problem at all with getting this job and you’ll probably impress your manager who’s interviewing you, which will definitely help and raise your chances of landing this job!
