How to Get a Freelance Photography Job as a Kid

BFly1 How to Get a Freelance Photography Job as a Kid

When you’re a kid and you want to make money, you have to think creatively. And who’s more creative than a kid that has a passion for photography? Lots of kids nowadays are great with digital cameras. But even if you’re not a pro, you can still make money from it. Surprisingly enough, you don’t have to be professional at all to make money from the pictures you take and we’ve discussed this in other articles.

As we’ve shown in other articles, you can be an amateur having no more than a digital camera and make as much as $250 a day for taking pictures. This could be you, especially if you’re  a kid looking for ways to get a job or make money.

As a kid, often the best way to make money is from doing your own thing because all too often, people discriminate against you because of your age. Well, all this can change if you can make some money with your camera.

One way to get started is by doing some portraits of of your friends for free. Soon it won’t be long before you’ll get good at it and people will be coming to you to ask you to take their pictures. when that happens, you can begin charging a small fee for your “services”.

Another way to make money as a kid photographer is to go to your neighborhood games, i.e football, soccer, track, etc, and take a bunch of pictures. After having your pictures developed, you can show them to the players on the teams and offer to sell the pictures to them. If the pictures are good enough, people will definitely want to buy them.

If your local newspaper has a “Teen Section”, find out if you can submit your photos to them. Many newspapers let people mail in their photos and pay them anywhere from $25-$50 for them.

All David Hobby wanted to do was pass along photo lighting tips to a friend. He jotted down some ideas and posted a blog —Strobist— to show how any beginning photographer could get beyond ordinary shots by using inexpensive, $300 flashes, just like pros. Then the world found out about him. Hobby now has 200,000 mostly amateur photographers as devoted readers. His site attracts 1.6 million page views a month. Read more.

If your school has a newsletter, newspaper or a year book, offer to help with it by taking pictures for the publication. This will make it easier to get a paid job as you move through high school and college – where you should be able to make decent money as a freelance photographer.

When starting out, one of the best thing to do is to take as many pictures as possible until you find your particular niche. Shoot pictures of everything from landscapes to family birthday parties. This way, you will learn to hone your style of photography. Also, play around with Photoshop and hone your skills until you become a Photoshop wizkid.

Being young and up-to-date on technology is definitely a plus in your favor. When you have enough money, you can buy a copy of Photographer’s Market Guide to Building Your Photography Business and start sending your pictures to different publications for consideration. If magazines or different publications like your photos, they will pay you for them.

Make up an AMAZING portfolio for yourself that you’ll be able to show to people as proof of your work. Consider creating a photo blog to show case your work – the way this photographer did here.

As you probably know, it’s a lot easier to get jobs and to get people to consider your work when you have a portfolio for people to look at. Also, having a portfolio will give you a great start at getting better paying jobs when you’re in college.

A good thing is that with you being so young, you have a lot of time to develop this hobby and become a professional at it. And when it comes time to apply for college, go somewhere that has a good photography major. Maybe you can go into management as an elective or a 2nd major (think: your own business) or possibly even accounting or marketing (so you can get the most bang for your buck and know how to work with money).

Whichever way you choose, finding a job as a kid photographer doesn’t have to be an impossible task. Even as a kid, you can make money. And what better way to do it than from your very own talents?!
