Learn how to make a molded candle and start your own home-based business. You can learn this DIY (do-it-yourself) project fast and start making money quickly, as molded candles are high in demand. You can sell these candles to people who are looking to buy gifts. They are high in demand during festivals and as decorative pieces too.
You will need the following materials for this project. These materials are available at Northstar3c.com and also at Southern Scentsations
- hot plate or stove top
- double boiler setup
- 1 to 1.5 lbs of candle wax (like paraffin, beeswax, or soy wax)
- candy/candle thermometer
- candle wick
- candle mold
- mold sealer
- work space clear of flammable items
- newspaper
- long thin rod (e.g. knitting needle, twig, pencil etc.)
- candle color (as required)
- Toothpick
- cloth piece
- baking soda (to put off fire, if need be)
Here are the steps involved in making a molded candle.
1. Start by preparing your work area. Choose a workspace away from flammable items. You can cover the workspace with some newspaper. This is so that if you spill anything during the candle making process, it can be cleaned easily.
2. Next, you need to insert about 0.5 inch of the candle wick into the hole, at the bottom of the candle mold. Roll this 0.5 inch of wick around your finger and hold it against the candle mold.
3. Take a small piece of mold sealer and use it to cover the coiled wick and the hole. If there is even a small gap, molten wax will drip through the gap. You don’t want to mess up that candle!
4. You can now pull the long end of the candle wick upwards. Tie it to a thin rod and place this rod across the mold’s top. See to it that the wick is taut, when tying it to the rod.
5. Next, you need to melt the wax using a double boiler setup. I suggest that you select a wax type, which will come out of the mold easily. Soy wax, beeswax and paraffin wax are great options. Don’t ever leave the double boiler setup unattended, as discussed in the fire safety instructions section.

6. Allow the temperature of the wax to reach 150 to 200 degrees. You can check the temperature using a candy or candle thermometer. Once the wax melts completely, turn off the stove, remove it from the heat and continue to stir. If you want to add any color to the molten wax, do so before removing the wax from the heat. Continue to stir till the color and molten wax mix well. If you are unsure at any stage, you can check the candle color package instructions.
7. You can now pour the molten wax and color mixture into the mold. Fill the mold such that about half an inch below the rim still remains empty. This is to add some of the molten wax at the end of the candle making process.
8. Allow this mold to cool naturally. After about 30 to 45 minutes, you will find that the top layer has cooled and formed a skin. Using a toothpick, poke a few holes near the wick. This will prevent the formation of air pockets.
9. You will find that as the mold gets cooler, a depression is formed at the center. You can reheat some of the leftover wax and add it to the mold, so that the depression gets filled. Don’t ever allow the molten wax to overflow. Else, it may become difficult to pull the candle out of the mold.
10. Allow several hours for the wax to solidify. Once the candle has cooled completely, remove the mold sealer from the bottom of the mold. Uncoil and stretch the 0.5 inch wick. Pull the candle out from the other end.
11.Untie the wick from the long thin rod and cut off the excess wick, leaving about a quarter of an inch. Cut the excess wick from the candle’s bottom.
12. If you find any marks on the surface of the candle, you can use a cloth piece to rub off the marks.
Now that you have learnt how to make a molded candle, here are some fire safety instructions that you must always follow:
- Never keep flammable items close to the stove.
- Don’t melt the wax directly. Always use a double boiler.
- Don’t ever leave the melting wax unattended.
- If there is a fire, make use of baking soda to put it off.
- Never put off the fire with water, if the wax catches fire.
- If the fire is inside the heating pot/boiler, douse it by covering the boiler with a lid.
