• hot plate or stove top
• double boiler setup
• 1 to 1.5 lbs of candle wax (like soy wax)
• candy/candle thermometer
• candle wick with metal tab
• Votive candle mold
• work space clear of inflammable items
• newspaper
• candle color (as required)
• toothpick
• baking soda (to put off fire, if need be)

Learn how to make a votive candle by following these steps:

1. Choose a workspace such that there are no inflammable items in the vicinity, and cover it with newspaper. This helps during the cleaning process, after you have finished making the candles.

2. Next, you need to prepare the votive candle molds. For this, affix the metal tab of a wick to the bottom of the candle mold with the help of 1-2 drops of molten wax. Ensure that the wick is at the center of the votive candle mold and is standing straight.

3. Place the soy wax in the double boiler setup and heat the wax so that it melts. Never leave the double boiler setup unattended, as this can be very risky.

4. Keep checking the temperature of the wax using a candle or candy thermometer. Once the wax melts completely at a temperature between 150-200 degrees, turn off the stove. If you want to add any color to the molten wax, do so now. Mix the color well with the molten wax and remove the mixture from the heat.

5. Pour the molten wax into the votive candle molds such that 0.5 inch below the rim is empty. You will also have to save some wax for later use.

6. Let this mold cool naturally. After about 30-45 mins, you will see that the top has cooled and a skin has formed. Use a toothpick to poke some holes near the wick, so that the trapped air gets released.

7. As the candle mold cools, the wax at the center of the candle tends to sink and a depression is formed. This is when you reheat some of the wax you had saved and add it to the mold again.

8. Once the votive candle molds have cooled completely, just turn the molds over and you will find that the votive candles slide out easily.

9. Finally, trim the candle wick to about 0.25 inch. Voila! You have just learnt to make a votive candle.

Now that you have learnt how to make a votive candle, here are some fire safety instructions:

• Keep all inflammable items away from the hot plate or stove.
• Always use a double boiler setup to melt the wax. Don’t ever melt the wax directly.
• Never leave the wax unattended in the double boiler.
• If there is a fire, make use of baking soda to put it off.
• Never put off the fire with water.
• If the fire is inside the double boiler heating pot, douse it by covering the boiler with a lid.
