The materials that you need for making scented candles are available at Northstar3c.com and Southern Scentsations. You can also find these items in several craft stores. You will require the following materials to make scented candles.
- hot plate or stove top
- double boiler setup
- 1 to 1.5 lbs of soy wax
- candy/candle thermometer
- candle wick
- candle mold
- mold sealer
- work space clear of flammable items
- newspaper
- long thin rod (e.g. knitting needle, chopstick, pencil etc.)
- candle color of your choice
- candle fragrance oils like vanilla, clove, lavender, orange chiffon, rose petals, pumpkin cheesecake, water blossom ivy, grapefruit, peppermint, lemongrass, eucalyptus etc. You can find a wide range of candle fragrance oils at fragranceoilsuppliers.com
- toothpick
- baking soda (to put off fire, if need be)
Here is the step-by-step guide on how to make scented candles.
1. You need to prepare a work area, which is clear of flammable items. Since candle making can get messy, it is best to spread out several sheets of newspaper on your work area. Once you are done making the scented candles, you can just toss the dirty newspapers, instead of wasting time scrubbing the work area.
2. Next, you need to insert about 0.5 inch of the candle wick into the hole, at the bottom of the candle mold.
3. Roll this 0.5 inch of wick around your finger and hold it against the candle mold. Use a small piece of mold sealer to seal the hole and cover the coiled wick. This will prevent the molten candle from oozing out of the hole, when you pour it into the mold.
4. Now pull the long end of the candle wick upwards, and tie it to a long thin rod. You can use a chopstick or pencil. While tying the wick to the long rod, ensure that the wick is taut inside the candle mold. Place the rod on the mold’s top.
5. This is the step where you need to be very careful. Set up the double boiler on the hot plate or stove, and drop the soy wax into the double boiler. I suggest soy wax, as it comes out of the mold easily and is great for making scented candles.

6. Keep checking the temperature of the wax with the help of a candy/candle thermometer. It is best to let the temperature reach 150 to 200 degrees. Don’t ever let it go above 250 degrees. We don’t want wax fumes catching fire! When you are certain that all the wax has melted, turn off the stove.
7. Before removing the molten wax from the heat, add the candle color and the fragrance oil of your choice. About 1/8 cup (30ml) of scented oil is enough. You can use candle fragrance oils like vanilla, clove, lavender, orange chiffon, rose petals, pumpkin cheesecake, water blossom ivy, grapefruit, peppermint, lemongrass, eucalyptus etc. You can find a wide range of candle fragrance oils at fragranceoilsuppliers.com.
8. Remove the molten wax mixture from the heat and continue to stir, till all the ingredients blend.
9. Add some soy wax chips into the candle mold. This helps bind the wax and prevents shrinkage, when the molten wax cools. Now you can pour the molten wax mixture into the mold.
10. Let the mold cool naturally for about 30 to 45 minutes. When you see a hard top layer, use a toothpick to make holes near the wick. This will prevent formation of air pockets.
11. Once the candle has cooled completely, remove the mold sealer from the bottom of the candle mold. Uncoil and stretch the 0.5 inch wick. You can then pull the scented candle out of the mold.
12. Finally, untie the wick from the long thin rod and cut off the excess wick, leaving about a quarter of an inch. Cut the excess wick from the scented candle’s bottom.
Now that you know how to make scented candles, there are some fire safety instructions that you must never forget during candle making.
- Your work area must be free of all flammable items.
- Wax must never be melted on the stove/hot plate directly. Use a double boiler setup.
- Never leave the wax unattended, when you are melting it in the double boiler.
- If the wax catches fire, you must never douse it with water. Make use of baking soda.
