During the summer months, many parents look for activities or programs to keep their young children busy. Many of them would welcome the idea of having a tutor for their children for the summer. And that’s where you can come in. You can tutor on an individual basis or offer group classes. Just by offering your services as a tutor, you can earn a lot of money over the summer. In different parts of the country, tutors can earn up to $40 per hour.

Driven by busy parents who may not have a lot of time to spend with their children, tutoring has become a $4 billion industry. You can easily get in on this and make a lot of money by tutoring children in subjects that you’re good in. The idea of tutoring someone shouldn’t be a scary thought. Because all tutoring involves is just helping someone in a subject that they may be a little weak in. Often, tuition is given in academic subjects like spelling, math, writing, social studies and reading. In fact, if a child has a reading problem, often the simplest solution to this is to just sit down with that child and let him read to you. How easy is that!?

Another subject that you could tutor people in for the summer is conversational English. If you’re a native English speaker, this should be pretty easy. Although you could benefit from having some sort of a TEFL certificate, it’s not mandatory if all you want to do is earn some extra cash in the summer or at other times when you have vacation from school. For most foreigners that are looking to brush up on their conversational English, all they require is that you’re a native English speaker. They don’t really care if you’re certified or not.

Also, you don’t have to go to a far off country to teach English in some school you’ve never heard of. You can do this in the library or in your home or the student’s home. There are plenty of ESL websites on the the Internet that offer free worksheets that you can use for your lessons. The only thing that you would have to do is print them off and use them. Another idea for resources is to have the parents of the children provide you with the materials you need or at least to pay for them. Then, you wouldn’t have to spend much time making copies. You can just go chapter by chapter in the books that you have.

Teenagers earning money in the summer by offering their services as a tutor is a great way to make money. I’ve been doing it for about 10 years as one of my income streams and there are times that I have more clients than I have time to deal with. Just for tutoring children in my spare time, I am able to earn around $40 an hour.

If you think this is something you might want to try, prepare a month or so before summer vacation starts and begin handing out flyers in your neighborhood. You can put flyers in supermarkets, libraries and other neighborhood stores. Also, if your target is younger children, you can hand out flyers to parents as they arrive at school to pick up their young children from school. Of course, you should tell your family, friends and neighbors and ask them to help you spread the word. You should give them your business cards, and ask them to give some out for you.

To get a quick start with getting clients, you could offer to give people a couple of hours as a free trial. Then if they like you, they can you hire for long term. From experience, what I’ve learned is that once you get a couple of students, it’s easier to get more because those clients usually spread the word to their friends.

While teenagers earning money in the summer in subjects such as English and other academic subjects is lucrative to get into, you can also tutor in other areas as well. For example, you could teach little league baseball, arts and crafts, soccer, computer classes, and just about any subject that you know something about! Summers don’t have to be spent flipping hamburgers. There are many teenagers earning money in the summer doing activities that challenge their minds and imagination and you can be one of them.
