Wanting to be a business person at a young age, or wanting to be employed while being a minor might encounter you some snags – because there are certain laws that you have to follow and yes, you might even have to ask for your parents’ permission. The minimum age to work in the USA is a serious matter that you should look into, especially if you’re thinking of getting a job.
According to the US Department of Labor:
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets wage, hours worked, and safety requirements for minors (individuals under age 18) working in jobs covered by the statute. The rules vary depending upon the particular age of the minor and the particular job involved. As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years of age as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.
That means, if you are 13 and under, you are really not allowed to work yet at public establishments and companies. And if you are between 14-17, you are also prohibited from working at places that are hazardous and dangerous, like construction, or other work that needs you to do some excavating, driving or operating big machines. These should be left to older, more experienced people, and rightly so.
As per the Fair Labor Standards Act, 14 years old is the minimum age to work if the work is non-agricultural-related. And if you are 13 years old and younger, you can work only for the following kinds of jobs: TV/radio/theatre/musical acts, delivering newspapers, babysitting or doing chores around the house. You can also work for your parents if they own a business, provided that their business is not mining- or manufacturing-related or overall dangerous for a child to be in.
If you plan on working and your age falls between 14-18 years old, it’s best that you ask someone like a guidance counselor at your school within your state to find out the legal minimum age to work. Also check with the company that you are applying for and read their policy – they should have a clause about allowing or not allowing people of a certain age to work for them. Some companies would need you to have a written permission from your parents or a work permit from your school stating that you are allowed to work.

I think these laws are good for some things but, not for others. Now days, you can work on the computer and start as early as you want. You can also, work in your families business and make some good money. I understand waiting until you are a certain age to work but, now days kids want to make and spend there own money earlier. Times are changing.
Yeah, you’re right, times are changing and kid do want to make money a lot sooner than the law allows. That’s why at tmmi we try to give a lot of different ideas to teens.
